Screen Candidates

Selecting the best candidates from the pool of applicants is essential. To achieve this, your company will need to identify the candidates who:

  • meet the established competencies as described in the job posting
  • add skills and knowledge to your workforce

Hiring Youth and Newcomers

Youth may have limited job experience and newcomers may have limited Canadian job experience. Consider how skills and competencies developed in other context (e.g., volunteering, school, and extracurricular activities, experience acquired in other countries) are transferable to your company's context and align with job requirements. Encourage applicants to highlight these transferable skills in their application by providing examples of roles from which applicable skills may have been built.

Hiring Newcomers

Examine your processes for biases and address any potential areas of concerns. Ensure individuals involved in the hiring process are aware of and, if possible, trained on unconscious bias and systemic discrimination. This ensures you are selecting employees based on qualifications and not accidentally excluding quality candidates due to their cultural background.

It is recommended to have in place processes which ensure all candidates are screened in the same way and regarding the same competencies. In addition, a diverse hiring panel composed of more than one person can reduce the possible occurrence of bias in the process.

Consider consulting resources that have been designed to support employers hiring internationally trained workers such as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)'s resource: The Employers Roadmap: Hiring and Retaining Internationally Trained Workers.

A Candidate Assessment Tool can support this process.
