Performance Management
Employee performance management helps your company:
- Connect organizational and individual objectives
- Increase productivity by setting clear expectations
- Foster learning and development through coaching and meaningful feedback
- Support employee competency and skill development as well as career opportunities
- Retain high-performing employees by acknowledging and rewarding them for their contributions
- Identify performance issues
Having a consistent and formalized employee performance management process helps prevent accidental bias and supports employees who need accommodations.
Hiring Youth
Youth value regular feedback. Provide positive reinforcement promptly when they do something right, and address areas for improvement as soon as possible. One way to achieve this is to have frequent, short check-ins (e.g., weekly or every other week).
Encourage youth to ask questions whenever they are unsure. Emphasize that safety concerns should always be raised immediately.
Hiring Newcomers
Workplace expectations may differ from what newcomers are familiar with. Do not assume that newcomers are already familiar with your workplace norms or procedures. If you notice they are performing tasks incorrectly or differently than expected, provide correction respectfully and explain why tasks are done a certain way. They may be defaulting to a norm or standard that they learned abroad or in a different context.
Provide regular feedback and clear instructions early on. Check in frequently to ensure understanding and remind them that it is encouraged to ask questions or raise concerns.
