The Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) is designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) meet the unique challenges they face in bringing new products, processes or services to market.
IRAP offers a range of services designed to help you acess key resources - expert advice, new technologies and testing facilities, and financial assistance - at the right time, and in the right place. Our goal is to help you turn good ideas into profitable business lines as quickly as possible.
Each year, we help more than 12,000 SME's grow and prosper. We've got experience in almost every sector: food and agriculture, building and construction, electronics, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, software development, the list goes on!

At IRAP, we've established a nation-wide network of people and organizations that know what it takes to succeed in a dynamic and competitive marketplace. Our 260 industrial Technology Advisors (ITAs) work within Canada's innovation system and can help you access key players who have the facilities and expertise you need to carry out Research and Development (R & D) activities.
The IRAP network is made up of 130 public and private research and technology-based organizations (universities, colleges, research centres, corporations, and industrial and professional associations). We also link to federal and provincial government programs and agencies that can help you make the most of your innovative ideas.

From product design and material selection to production methods and project management - with IRAP, you can tap into sources of specialized expertise precisely when you need it most. Your ITA will help you identify what you need and where to find it, at each stage of the product development process.
Your Industrial Technology Advisor (ITA) will work to establish links with individuals who can assist you in areas such as:
- technical assistance
- literature and patent searches
- referrals to other programs and services
- expertise searches
- linkages and networks to establish multi-party collaboration
- diagnostic services
If your innovative idea evolves into a IRAP project, your ITA will continue to provide advice and assistance throughout its development. ITAs work with you each step of the way.
