New Regulations

• Regulations became law effective December 12, 2002
  • Three year implementation period, unless claim is made (then immediate)
  • Five year for small businesses (less than $1million net sales/year), unless claim is made
• Mandatory on all pre-packaged foods, with a few exemptions; including foods with specific labelling requirements
• Standardized format of nutrient content of food.
• "Available label space" considered for the nutrient facts panel has been revised.
• Additional permitted elements, with triggered declaration of optional nutrients
• Rounding requirements modified
• Nutrient claims modified
